History
Fassa Bortolo has its origins in lime, a raw material that is part of the company’s DNA. The construction of the first lime kilns marked the beginning of a success story that has continued to the current day, reaching new qualitative heights in terms of research, innovation, technology and care for the environment.
Today the Fassa Group is the only company to produce all types of lime: calcitic lime, magnesium lime, dolomitic lime and NHL 3.5 natural hydraulic lime.
A legacy of innovation since 1710
The historical roots of Fassa Bortolo date back to 1710, but it was in an early 20th-century factory – the former Lazzaris factory in Spresiano (TV), now our Head Office – that our industrial vision truly took shape. From this site, a series of ambitious projects began, driving our expansion across both national and international markets. This unique place continues to serve as an incubator for ideas, a space that promotes and supports competitive challenges.
Development ideas, the driving force behind our dynamic and widespread presence, always close to our clients.
Ideas of progress grounded in the strategic expertise of today’s leadership and in the capabilities of those preparing to shape the future of our company.
A strategically distributed presence allows for the availability of “zero mile” products, with a strong focus on sustainability, the reduction of transport-related pollution, and the minimisation of exhaust emissions and tyre waste in the environment. All this, to continue delivering the superior quality that today’s market demands.
Choosing our lime means choosing one of the key raw materials used in our products: the Lime Division supplies the very same lime used in the manufacturing of construction materials across the Fassa Group.

The Fassa Group currently operates 18 production sites in Italy, as well as one plant in Portugal, one in Spain, and one in Brazil, with 10 commercial branches located across Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain and the United Kingdom.
In addition to the two main plants historically dedicated to lime production (Spresiano, in the province of Treviso, the company’s historic headquarters, and Montichiari, in the province of Brescia) two more lime production sites have recently been added: one located in Ceraino di Dolcè (Verona) and the other in Schio (Vicenza).
Thanks to these recent acquisitions, the Group has further strengthened its position in the industry, becoming the second-largest lime producer in Italy.
These sites use a special Parallel-Flow Regenerative Kiln (PFRK), the least energy-consuming kiln in use on the market. This stands as tangible proof of the Group’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its production processes and respecting the local territories in which it operates.
Spresiano (Treviso)
Plant
The first and most important plant of the Group, established in 1981, marked the starting point of the company’s national and international growth and expansion.
Tradition and innovation coexist seamlessly at the Spresiano production site, located in the province of Treviso. The plant hosts two technologically advanced and highly automated production units, dedicated to the manufacturing of lime and pre-mixed products.
Calcination occurs in a Maerz regenerative kiln with a production capacity of 300 tonnes of calcium oxide per day. The lime produced at this site is of the highest quality, thanks to the purity of the limestone and the efficiency of the production facilities.
Montichiari (Brescia)
Plant
This facility is exclusively dedicated to the production of lump lime, hydrated lime and micronized calcium oxide. Equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, it features two Maerz parallel-flow regenerative kilns, with a total production capacity of 1,000 tonnes per day.
In addition to recent expansions and the installation of a new plant for the production of dolomitic mixtures, the latest frontier in the iron & steel industry, the site is subject to strict quality controls and continuous product innovation, ensuring compliance with even the most demanding industry requirements.
Ceraino di Dolcè (Verona)
Plant
Acquired by Fassa S.r.l. in 2017, the plant is equipped with two Maerz regenerative kilns, providing a daily production capacity of 700 tonnes. A key asset of the facility is its nearby quarry, which supplies exceptionally pure limestone.
Following the acquisition, the site underwent a significant revamping process, achieving excellent results in terms of circular economy, reduced environmental footprint, and supply chain sustainability. Improvements included expanded storage capacity, reduced noise and visual impact, and a switch in fuel source from pet coke to wood powder. The use of woodworking waste as fuel has had the most notable environmental benefit, as it generates less CO2 than methane, making it a highly sustainable choice.
Schio (Vicenza)
Plant
Acquired in March 2017, and now operated under the direction and coordination of Fassa S.r.l., the Calce Barattoni S.p.A. plant is specialised in the production of dolomitic lime.
The raw material is fired in a CIM kiln with a production capacity of 400 tonnes per day. Originally built in 2000, the plant was converted in 2013 into a double-shaft regenerative kiln for the production of dolomitic lime.
R&D: Fassa I-Lab
Our research is focused on producing quality. We identify the most technologically-innovative solutions in order to expand the horizons of our products. Investing in research is essential for any company that wants to constantly improve its performance.
This is why we have our own Research Centre, Fassa I-Lab, a state-of-the-art laboratory with a wide range of equipment and apparatus, continuously updated to meet the latest regulatory and market requirements and the customers’ needs for new solutions.
Instruments for fluorescence and X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and laser particle analysis are used to analyse materials at a microscopic level and identify their chemical-physical properties, so as to be able to select the formulations that best certify the quality of our products, and predict, using specific tests, their behaviour in a variety of environmental conditions.
Our daily focus on research has also resulted in our company obtaining ISO 9001:2015 certification. This is, for us, further confirmation of the superior quality we offer our customers industry in this area so that we always deliver excellence. In this strategic hub, we process information from the market and translate it into solutions that are developed and certified before being marketed.
